As a surgeon, there’s nothing like going to a science festival. Not only is it a way to release my inner-geek, it’s also a great way to meet others who are like me.
But more than that, it’s also the perfect way to spend time with my twins, Dave and Daniel. As a working mom, I barely get time to spend with them and science festivals and special events are the perfect way to catch up to them!
That’s why, this year, I took my boys to the Science Festival Brisbane for some (cliché) bonding time, and mandatory learning!
When you’re handling two pre-teen boys by yourself, you know it’s going to be utter chaos. But I wanted them to be themselves and learn all they could about innovations, technology, and the incredible ways science has discovered everything that was termed “impossible” and “theories of madmen” centuries ago.
As a mom, I always do my best to encourage them to learn, develop, and grow so that they can become innovators in their own way in the future.
The best thing about living in Australia is that we have some of the most interesting and unique creatures living in the wild—perfect for some research and education time with the kids!
Anyway, the science festival was one of the most remarkable and unforgettable experiences in my life! My kids were just as amazed and dazed as I was. We got to meet a lot of innovators, researchers, and prominent scientists.
We heard them discuss new theories, inventions, and the progress of technology. From presentations, to videos, and live content, we were exposed to the magic of scientific discoveries.
In addition, my sons found what they wanted to be. Dave decided he wanted to be an astronaut and Daniel decided on becoming an inventor.
Not only did I feel proud of them, I felt happy knowing they wanted to pursue their own career, and help humanity in their own ways. At that moment, I felt accomplished as a mom.
The event brought my sons and I closer, as we shared our love for science, and discovery. The rest of the festival was full of amazing inventions, aspiring innovators, and we even got to see a battle between two mini robots! We also saw presentations on human regeneration, pain and poisoning, as well as how the human mind works. It was simply stunning!
All in all, it was an amazing experience and I plan on taking them next year as well.
